230 Collector Cars Selling At No Reserve Feb. 27-28 In Las Vegas
Mecum Auctions to Sell Rogers’ Classic Car Museum Collection to Benefit Arts and Education

Walworth, Wis. – Feb. 3, 2015 – Mecum Auctions will have the exclusive opportunity to offer the Rogers’ Classic Car Museum Collection of more than 230 classic cars at auction this Feb. 27-28, at no reserve. Mecum will take the auction stage directly to the cars and the auction will be held right from the collection’s museum display space in Las Vegas. All proceeds from both the vehicles and collected gate admission will benefit The Rogers Foundation – dedicated to transforming lives through arts and education.

Media mogul, former chancellor and lover of all things automotive, Jim Rogers was one of this era’s most passionate activists and most generous philanthropists – and in addition, he was a prolific collector of classic automobiles.

Rogers passed away in June 2014 at age 75, but his passions did not die with him, and he left behind a legacy larger than life, as well as his massive car collection. Named by Time magazine as one of the top 12 philanthropists in the nation, after his donations to institutions of higher education reached $275 million, Rogers gave more than just money – he also devoted his time and his voice. Owner of the NBC affiliate station for Southern Nevada and also the chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, he had strong beliefs on both media operation as well as secondary education. In Rogers’ five years as chancellor, he accepted a salary of only one dollar per year, believing that the position was not about making money, but rather an opportunity to give back to an institution he believed in with such conviction.

Rogers was also passionate in his personal life, and classic cars were closest to his heart. Along with the help of his friend, museum curator Mike Pratt, Rogers assembled a grand collection. “In our 16, almost 17-years working together, we grew the collection from about 20 cars to nearly 300 at its peak,” says Pratt. “We went after mostly American cars, and we went after the rare cars that not many people had.”

“Jim’s desire was to create a collection that represented the American working man’s climb to success,” explains his widow Beverly Rogers.

Rogers’ resulting 230-plus-car assemblage is a well-thought-out grouping of primarily American classics sprinkled with European luxury rides including everything from a 1915 Ford Model T (Lot S221) through not one, but two 2012 Fisker Karma Sedans (Lot S50 and Lot S86). Some of the auction headliners include a 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible (Lot S125), a 1962 Rolls-Royce Mulliner Drophead Coupe (Lot S120), a 1956 Dual-Ghia Convertible (Lot S127) and a 1939 Cadillac Series 90 V-16 Imperial Touring Sedan (Lot S75), to name a few.

“When you buy a car from Jim Rogers’ collection, you’re not just buying a well-made or refurbished automobile,” Beverly says, “you’re buying a piece of American history. Take it to heart – enjoy it – and my heartfelt request is that someday you pass it on, and let the next generation understand and appreciate the place of the automobile in American history. That, my friends, will do Jim proud.”

Rogers’ legacy will live on through his cars as well as through the work of The Rogers Foundation, the namesake nonprofit, established with a mission to provide and enhance arts and education opportunities for students in Southern Nevada. The Foundation seeks to ensure that students have access and support for academic achievement and artistic development through scholarships, grants, and other initiatives. This auction will serve as the inaugural major gift to the foundation, a giant first step to the long-lasting and meaningful mark The Rogers Foundation seeks to leave on Southern Nevada and a perfect way to pay homage to a remarkable man.

The cars were collected from the 1950s to the 1970s by entrepreneur shipping magnate Roger Baillon, who dreamt of restoring them to their former glory and displaying them in a museum. However, his plans were dashed as his business struggled, forcing Mr Baillon to sell about 50 of the vehicles.Since then, his collection has sat dormant in makeshift corrugated iron shelters and outbuildings on the farm. Mr Baillon died about 10 years ago and his son, Jacques, who inherited the collection, died last year.Mr Baillon’s grandchildren had no idea of the extent of the collection, calling in car specialists Matthieu Lamoure and Pierre Novikoff of auctioneers Artcurial Motorcars to estimate its value.

The Collectors’ Car Department at Artcurial has discovered 60 collectors’ automobiles, all major marques dating from the early days of the motor car through to the 1970s. Found following fifty years of lying dormant, the Baillon collection will be sold by Artcurial Motorcars in the first part of the traditional sale at Retromobile Salon, on 6 February 2015, in Paris. These motor cars have been tucked away in a property in the West of France, under makeshift corrugated iron shelters and in various outbuildings. AUBURN, Indiana (September 23, 2014) – Fresh on the heels of its successful Auburn Fall weekendAuctions America is thrilled to announce an exciting new online collector car auction: BidAnywhere. Scheduled November 21 at auctionsamerica.com, this all-new, exclusively online auction will provide collectors with a simple and convenient bidding solution, enabling them to participate from anywhere in the world. To ensure accurate representation of all lots, and provide bidders with a level of confidence unmatched in the industry, detailed condition reports, completed by Auctions America’s expert team of specialists, will accompany each vehicle and will be available for viewing in advance.

Featuring some 75 vehicles, the ‘BidAnywhere’ sale rounds out what has been a record year for the Auctions America team. Among early highlights secured for the online auction is a low mileage, like-new 1991 Ferrari Testarossa, accompanied by factory manuals and tools, along with a well-documented 1987 Buick GNX. One of the rarest, fastest and most sought after production cars of its era, the GNX is also presented in as-new condition, showing less than 100 original miles, and is accompanied by numerous special accessories including a GNX jacket, book and model. Additional early entries include: an award-winning 1937 Cadillac V-16 Custom Imperial, one of only two built and reportedly used as the MGM Studios car in period for many of the stars of the time, including Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh during the filming of Gone with the Wind; a fully restored, AACA Grand National winning 1955 Chevrolet Model 3112 Carryall Woodie; and a barnfind 1956 AC Bristol.

“Auctions America has always provided a great range of remote bidding options to participate in our sales, including Internet bidding,” says Donnie Gould, president of the company. “However, BidAnywhere takes it one step further, providing collectors with a more robust and interactive way to bid online on all the cars they love, anywhere they are.”

Gould adds, “as a company, Auctions America is committed to delivering first-class service and looking for new ways to raise the bar. As we worked to overcome concerns associated with online sales and buying sight unseen, the availability of professional condition reports for each lot has received great early feedback. These reports are completed by our own expert team of specialists, who have over 180 combined years’ experience buying, selling, racing and restoring collector vehicles – meaning bidders can participate confidently, knowing the vehicles have been reviewed by qualified experts.”

BidAnywhere: How It Works

Auctions America’s car specialists will perform a condition report for each car in the sale, often based on an in-person inspection. These reports will be published online, accompanying the description and detailed photography of each vehicle to provide collectors with a first-hand opinion from a trusted source. Auctions America specialists will be available prior to the sale to answer any additional questions.

On sale day, an auctioneer will be calling bids live online; the auction will be Live Virtual, meaning it will only take place on the Internet. Buyers can place bids in real-time through a platform created specially for Auctions America by Proxibid, the most trusted online Marketplace for buying and selling highly valued items like the vehicles in this auction. Proxibid’s online bidding platform is backed by the most robust fraud prevention system in the industry, designed to ensure both buyers and sellers are safe when transacting online. Prior to the sale, buyers can place absentee bids on vehicles of interest.

For successful bidders, the process remains simple and convenient through to delivery. They simply pay by wire transfer, and the Auctions America team securely shares their information with transportation partner Reliable Carriers, who will arrange vehicle pick up from the consignor’s garage while maintaining client confidentiality.

Texas-Sized Sam Pack Five Star collection achieves impressive 11.5 million at auction

News Release:
November 17, 2013
Source: http://www.auctionsamerica.com/media/release.cfm?ID=1115.  Reproduced with permission.

DALLAS, Texas (November 16, 2014) – RM Auctions together with Auctions America reaffirmed its position as the industry leader in private automotive collection sales on the weekend, generating an impressive $11,543,400 in sales with 100 percent of lots sold at its Sam Pack Five Star Collection sale in Dallas, Texas.

The result of more than a decade of dedicated acquisition by respected businessman, Sam Pack, the collection presented a broad range of ownership opportunities for enthusiasts. From a terrific series of fifties and sixties icons, through to a remarkable collection of Detroit muscle, and a superb series of concepts, customs and modern collectibles, the offering was marked by incredible diversity and quality. In total, Saturday’s sale lifted the gavel on 131 vehicles before a packed house. The offering represented just a portion of Mr. Pack’s immense collection, offered in an effort to downsize the group to a more manageable level and allowing him to remain active in the hobby. Impressively, bidders represented eight countries from around the world and 36 states across the U.S.

“We were incredibly honored to have been entrusted by Mr. Pack to handle this sale, and thrilled to continue our strong track record in Texas” said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions’ and Auctions America’s West Coast Division. “The results reflect not only a great group of motor cars, but an appreciation for the passion of a true gentleman and collector. Mr. Pack’s unwavering commitment to quality was industry known and wonderfully represented by the offering this weekend. As an owner, he instilled confidence in many of the first time bidders and veteran collectors in attendance, who were more than happy to take home a car of excellent presentation and condition. All in all, it was a fantastic sale with plenty of spirited bidding and numerous lots exceeding expectations.”

Headlining Saturday’s sale and the subject of one of many lively bidding contests, was an iconic 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra. A part of the collection since 2008, the iconic American sports car achieved seven figures, selling for a strong $1,292,500. Another hotly contested lot was the “as-new” 2006 Ford GT, one of 60 Fords that crossed the podium. Featuring delivery mileage only with less than 13 miles on its clock, the GT garnered a fantastic $418,000 – a strong result that reflects the continued popularity and rising values of these late-model collectibles. Additional Fords exceeding pre-sale estimates included a supercharged 1957 Ford Thunderbird “F-Code”, which passed onto its fourth owner for $247,500, and a one-off 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Parnelli Jones Edition, showing just 38.5 miles, which commanded $88,000.

Illustrating the collection’s incredible diversity, a superb series of customs also drew big bids. Tremendous pre-sale interest in the 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr Coupe Custom, a stunning creation with 600bhp, translated into an outstanding $253,000 (above estimate), while a 1937 Ford Roadster Oze Custom, described as a street rod for the 21st century, achieved $99,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $60,000 – $80,000.

Other notable sales included:

• a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS NASCAR, campaigned by Jeff Gordon in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, fuelled one of the most intense battles of the day. Roaring onto the auction stage to applause from the audience, it shattered its pre-sale estimate at a healthy $165,000.

• Highlighting the collection’s unique group of concepts was a 2005 Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin Concept, unveiled at the 2005 New York Auto Show, which tripled its pre-sale estimate at $173,250. A bold, one-of-a-kind 2004 Lincoln Mark X Concept, shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, also surpassed pre-sale expectations at $129,500.

Full proceeds from the sale of the collection’s 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 ($126,500), along with part proceeds from event admission, will be donated to Holy Angels, a residential and training campus for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

“When I made the decision to pare down my collection, a lot of people asked me who I was going to use. Without hesitation, I said RM Auctions / Auctions America. In my opinion, they are the best in the business,” said Sam Pack. “I chose them based on years of respect and trust, and a relationship built on interacting with them as both a buyer and a seller. From their organization and process to their follow through and execution, the level of service they provide is unmatched. They are incredibly client-focused, and the fact that this weekend’s sale represented their 30th private collection in 35 years of business, speaks volumes.”
